I%26#39;m wondering whether anyone has visited Hotel Restaurant Le Pidanoux in Julien du Verdon. I%26#39;d be very grateful if someone could post their thoughts, reflections etc. as I%26#39;m thinking of booking 1 night with them.
Many thanks.

I%26#39;ve just spent one night there and I can say it is fine. It%26#39;s simple but clean, absolutely not expensive - good value. Twin room with shower and WC, shampoo, soap, towels provided. No minibar. Small TV with the six French TV channels.
A two storey building, reception is in the bar at the back on the first floor which is a little disconcerting at first. Breakfast is served in the bar or on the terrace outside, but you have some very loud villagers there for their morning coffee too - the only negative in my experience. I didn%26#39;t eat in the restaurant but there seemed to be a wide selection on the menu, all at good prices.
Bar/Restaurant is the only commerce in a very small village - do not consider going if you don%26#39;t have a car. Apart from admiring the view of the lake, there is nothing else to do there whatsoever. I had planned to spend just one night there and go on to tour the Gorges du Verdon but had problems with my car and had to turn back as soon as I left the next morning.
But I would certainly have no problems about staying there again if I were passing through. To enjoy a quiet stroll around in the evening though I might choose Castellane, a little further down the road and with a bigger choice of hotels and restaurants. But if you don%26#39;t mind the calm, Le Pidanoux is fine.

The hotel is a very simple place, and we were a little disappointed when we first saw it. However, the guests staying there and the people working there made it a delightful experience and one we treasure. The afternoon when we arrived a German bicycle team was playing boules and invited us to join. At the same time an antique car club showed up for drinks. Later, after walking around the village we sat in the shade at the outside tables of the restaurant drinking wine and eating bread, cheese, and saucisse we got at the market.
For dinner, the food was plentiful and inexpensive, and the restaurant guests were a gregarious group that made us feel at home. My French is poor, and so was much of their English, but we even laughed at each other trying to communicate. As I said, a delightful experience.
