After pouring through the internet for my March trip, I%26#39;ve found an apartment that seems to be priced right and available on my dates.
The apartment is http://www.vrbo.com/18667 and says it%26#39;s located in the 8th but looks like the 17th arr on a map. It seems a bit far out and I%26#39;m wondering if the Metro is a bit of a walk.
I%26#39;ve only stayed in Paris once and my 68 year old father will be with me, so I want to make sure that there is transportation and supermarkets available.
I%26#39;ve tried many other apartments and Citadines and most don%26#39;t rent for less than a week or are booked solid during the first week of March.

The apartment is in the 17th. The address is 71/73 Avenue des Ternes. Check it out on google maps. I matched a facade photo with the photo on VRBO. This is about 700 yards from the arc de triomphe which is the border with the 8th arrondisement. The immediate neighbohood is nice. There is a charming street nearby with cafés called the rue des acacias and the open market nearby is great too but you will be a little far out from the center of Paris. On the upside, the air france bus will take you directly from the airport to porte maillot metro stop (which is the closest). I would look for apartments in the 3rd (a little cheaper than the Marais but central to all attractions)

I am staying very near this apartment when I go to Paris in September. But I will be there a month and want to explore the 17th arrondissement which is unfamiliar to me.
For someone who will just be in Paris for a few days, you need to decide what your priority is. Do you want to see as many sites as you can possibly fit in? Do you want to see a few sites, not be in a hurry, and get the feel of Paris? There are metro stations near the apartment you are considering and literally nearby to everywhere in Paris. What kind of walking condition is your 68 year old father in? The only problem with the Metros is that often you have to walk lots of stairs.
If you want to be close to the major sites, you might consider 1-6 arrondissements (7500_). However, Paris is not really very big. You are by the Arc de Triomphe which is the western end of the Champs-Elysees. At the other end of the Champs-Elysees is the Place de la Concorde, Tuileries Gardens, L%26#39;Orangerie, Angelina%26#39;s, Louvre, etc.
You have to determine your priorities. I think where you stay is an important factor in your enjoyment level. If you like that apartment and it is within your budget, I would probably rent it.

Heather, walking directions on google maps show the Charles de Gaulle/Etoile metro stop (mentioned on the vrbo site) is about 0.9 km from the apartment. A shorter option would be to get on the metro at Ternes or Argentine, and then ride 1 stop to CDG/Etoile if you want to change lines. You can end up doing a lot of walking to change metro lines, though, so it may not really be shorter.
I think the apartment looks great, but it does appear to be bit far from the metro if you%26#39;re concerned about walking distance. I recently traveled with my mom in her mid-70%26#39;s. After a long day of walking, it was nice to have the hotel only a 5 minute walk from the metro.
Have you tried an agency like Vacation in Paris? They could tell you whether they have availability within their portfolio that would suit your needs.

Heather, I used the pagesjaunes.fr website to look up supermarkets near the apartment. There is a Franprix and a Champion each less than 100 meters from the apartment. This is quite close.
Makes it easier to carry that extra bottle of wine back to the apartment.

Thanks for all the help. My dad is a very spry 68, long-distance cycling, etc. We live in an urban area and are used to walking.
I%26#39;ve stayed in the Center of Paris but my dad hasn%26#39;t.
I like the apartment and the owner has already been in contact, hopefully will return with a trip report.

Sounds like you%26#39;re all set. The apartment really does look great. The owner spends time living there so it%26#39;s furnished as a home, not an investment property.
My trip with my mom created a lifelong memory for both of us. I wish you and your dad the same.

I stayed near there for my first trip to Paris, although it was closer to the Argentine station. I absolutely loved it. It%26#39;s more residential, so I got that living-like-a-local feeling as I went back to the hotel every night.
I can%26#39;t really address any of your other concerns except to say that you%26#39;ll enjoy the neighborhood.

Did you try centreparis.com?? They rent for less than a week and we had no problems renting from them and will do so again and again...

After checking out numerous other options including vacationsin paris.com, I think I%26#39;m going to stick with this apartment. All of the apartments that I choose on VIP were booked and the others seemed a little too good to be true(1bd in Les Halles for $130/night).
This is a last minute trip with dad and so my planning left a lot to be desired. But the reviews on the website seem to be legit and the clean look of the apartment are pluses. The area does seem to be off the tourist path which can be good-and make me use my horrible French.
One more question, are the streets around the Arc safe at night? I was told it gets a little desolute at night and want to make sure that it%26#39;s ok. I%26#39;ve stayed around Kings Cross at night and have had no issues(except 1 drunk person).
Thanks. Merci.
