Best way to get from Southern France to Northern France

We will be exploring southern France - Riviera and Provence, and then plan to explore Paris and the Brittany area, include MSM. Our plans at this time are to explore southern France and then go to MSM to spend an evening. Then do the D Day beaches, etc. and then in to Paris before we fly home. We are still very flexible on our plans, however, so this can all be moved around as needed.

Because trains will require a stop over in Paris for a couple of hours, it seems air is our best option to go from one end of the country to the other - but most of the airlines like Ryan Air seem to fly out of the country, and not puddle jump within France. France Air has some options, but most require change of planes/stop over in Lyon and/or Paris which means we%26#39;re really not saving time I believe. We could always drive it, which I don%26#39;t mind, but I think it would take two long days in the car - not sure that%26#39;s a good option.

Suggestions? Thanks

Hi LoveTravel !! Really depends on how much time you have available and time of year you will be there. I assume you will be driving in the south of France. You are right about a two day drive, maybe 10 hours, but if you look at a map, you may be driving through some nice areas, like the Chateaux area, so there is some nice sightseeing along the way. Having a car in the D day area comes in handy, you can see numerous sites and towns on your way to Paris. Happy planning. Viamichelin is a good planning map and driving site.

Even with the need to change trains in Paris (and het from Gare de Lyon to Gare St Lazare), the trip is around six hours.

For example, depart Avignon 10.05 and arrive Caen 15.51.

Obviously, you will have to decide whether train or car is better for you.

Ryanair flies from Marseille to Brest Brittany. You can pick up some really cheap flights if you book far enough in advance. I%26#39;m sure the drive would be lovely, if you have the time, but you can have a look at:

www.ryanair.com and check out whether your dates coincide with their schedule out of MRS to Brest Brittany.

Air France fly Marseille-Rennes

Because of the much longer train journey, there are many flights every day from Nice to Paris. Your cheapest option might be to fly Easyjet from Nice to Orly then hire another car.

Thanks for the input, especially the flight info on the two cities - I searched for several departure/destination selections and came up blank so this helps quite a bit. We will have a car in Provence and then in northern France, will get rid of it before Paris. I dont%26#39; mind driving, actually love to drive - but won%26#39;t want to take more than two days to do the drive or we%26#39;ll have to eliminate some of our itinerary.

Thanks again -

Me again - Looking at driving/train/flying still. My husband would prefer to drive - or should I say, have me drive so he can sight-see :) If we drive from Arles to MSM, I%26#39;d like to stop half way to break it up. That puts us thrugh Clermont-Ferrand. Not sure if that is mid-way or not, but any recommendations on a nice place in that area - if any. If we drive, should we go further west and drive up the the Dordogne region? tks
