Travel along the Côte d'Azur: Trains, Scooter, etc

Hello,

I am currently planning a trip in late May to early June to Europe, and one of the legs of my trip will be a 4 night stay in the Côte d%26#39;Azur. As of now I%26#39;m in the early stages of planning. As of now, I%26#39;m looking in to flying in to the Nice airport from Heathrow.

A. If I stay in Nice, what are your thoughts on transportation. Would you recommend me to rent a scooter? In late May, how is traffic? Would it be like a nightmare? I know the train system is quite efficient, but there is just so much more to see and so much freedom if I have a scooter. How dangerous would this decision be? I%26#39;m well aware of the risks involved, I just want some insight.

B. With 5 days/ 4 nights, would you say, even with a scooter, I have enough time to see what I want to see? I want to have ample time in Monte Carlo, Cannes, and St. Tropez. I%26#39;ve been told Menton is nice too. Distance wise (if I stayed in Nice), is this possible? What about towns in the Italian Riveria, anything that%26#39;s close by that you recommend?

I%26#39;m sure I%26#39;ll have more questions.

Thank you, Andrew

late may is the time of the cannes film festival [13-24 may 2009 ] and the monaco grand prix [21-24may 2009] so trafic into cannes and monaco can be crazy. I%26#39;d advise using the trains on these dates.

st tropez i would say was far too far away and i don%26#39;t think anyone i know who drives a scooter ever goes far from Nice on it as its usually used as a run around within Nice

Public transport is good and cheap = trains run along the coast and into the mountains = trams and buses which gop just about everywhere in the area cost one euro per trip

btw Nice is really quite a compact and easily walkable city as long as you are staying in the main areas -port, centre, old town and not out near the airport.

There is also a tramway which is good for saving the legs
