Happy New Year. My husband and I will be travelling into the dordogne area for three days in May. We are thinking of basing ourselves in Sarlat area as it appears to be a bigger town and would like the opportunity of walking into the local village at night and having a meal etc. Not having to drive anywhere, especially when we would have been driving most days to see the area. Has anyone any ideas of nice b%26amp;b to stay or if there is another place to base ourselves that is very quaint, and has atmosphere please let me know. Thank you.

Sarlat is lovely. Most of the old town is pedestrianised except for one road through the middle, so it is nice to move around in. You need to park your car near the edge but this is not difficult.
There is a delightful covered market open each day as well as several big markets set up in the town, including a Staurday one which takes over the whole town INCLUDING THE MAIN PARKING AREA. Do not leave your car in there overnight. Not only will you get fined but you can%26#39;t get the car out till the market is just about finished (Bitter experience here, we were dumb)
We stayed at the Maison des Poetes in the old centre. It was absolutely charming but access to the rooms is via a narrow curled stairway and a bit of a struggle with luggage. They don%26#39;t tell you this on the website. So go for the lowest of the rooms, which was the Verlaine.

Hi Bells54
I highly recommend Villa des Consuls. http://www.villaconsuls.fr
You can select either a room or an apartment, located in the centre of Sarlat. David serves breakfast, or if you select an apartment you will get a fridge and can either do your own or take breakfast in the breakfast room.

The market in Sarlat is on Wednesday and Saturday, with Saturday being the bigger of the two.
The covered market LynnB is referring to is a half-dozen vendors set up in what used to be a church, just off the main place. It%26#39;s not terrible, but you%26#39;d be better off buying your goods on the main street on non-market days, or driving to one of the local towns (St Cyprien has an excellent market on Sunday, Le Bugue on Monday, etc.)

Thank you all very much. I will follow up all those ideas.
