Hi,
We are coming over to France, travelling into Paris, Bordeaux and Nice - we are unsure to visit Lyon or not, would people recommend visiting it?
What is there to see do that people have enjoyed and recommend?
Cheers
Sara

Hi Sara81
I%26#39;m not sure where you were planning on fitting Lyon in between Paris, Bordeaux and Nice, but unless you were actually passing through Lyon en route, I would give it a miss. I%26#39;m probably going to get blasted for my comments but after spending 3 days walking around, up the hill to the cathedral, over the river to the covered markets, trying to find a half decent restaurant within the city centre, I would give Lyon a 3 out of 10. The area between Place Bellecour and Place Carnot was taken over by the homeless and the area around Hotel de Ville was overun by students.
If you do go to Lyon, I can recommend the Grand Hotel Boscolo.

Hi sara81, We like visiting Lyon. See the link below.
It is a very historic city surounded with really nice scenery, two rivers flow thru. The food is pretty good as well. Very good transportation to get around.

Hi ya,
Thank you for your comments.
Yeah, we will not be passing through we originally had it as a point to go to however looking at it more and more i am not even too sure i want to go there - to be honest we will be viewing so many churches etc.. so not too fussed if i miss out on a few more (not being rude or anything)...
We are going from Paris out to Reimes for a day then through to Normandy to view Mont St Michel and from there down to Bordeaux and onto Nice.
We are foodie people and i hear Lyon is good for that however being on a little budget we really can%26#39;t justify paying 100%26#39;s of Euro to eat out.
I thank you for your ideas. We may look at heading over to Venice instead while down South France or head to London and fly to Prague. :)

Sara, good luck in Venice on a budget! lol

Personally, I prefer Lyon to Bordeaux. Both are arge cities, with both benfits such as historic buildings, museums, etc. and demerits. If you are interstedin food, there are plenty of good places to eat at moderate prices (buchons) serving regional dishes. Try the roads in the Old Town behind the Cathedral, which is not the large church on the top of the hill.

Don%26#39;t worry, Lyon is definitively not a place to get to for churches! But a place that is rich of history with the former silk workers area and its traboules, that are amazing passageways, and with the best preserved Renaissance district in France. The setting with 2 rivers and 2 hills is amazing and has been chosen by the ancient roman as the Gaule capital (people from the ancient Rome knew a lot about special places for building their temples and theaters, don%26#39;t they?). It is the place where the cinema has been invented in 1895. It is also a vibrant city with beautiful museums, many many bars and restaurants (the city in France with the highest number of restaurants per inhabitant).

So I would say more a place for people who like to stroll around and discover hidden gems than for people who want to %26quot;do%26quot; touristical things. Of course it is also a good stopover for foodies...
Wigwam3, I am very sorry you did not find the nice places in Lyon, may be you should have come to this forum before ! (By the way the cathedral is not up the hill, but at the bottom on the river Saône).
