Me and my partner are wanting to organise a trip away for a weekend before Xmas. Ryanair are doing some silly prices to Tours Loire Valley Airport and we both love France.
Trouble is I dont know anything about Tours, so could any of you answer my questions:
1. Is it easy enough to get from the airport into the town/city via public transport? time? cost?
2. Is the city a nice place to visit? Is there enough to do for a weekend?
3. We would be going early December. Do they have Xmas markets?
4. Any recommended hotels for a reasonal price tag, 4* prefered.
Many thanks
Matthew

There is a bus which meets the plane at TUV. You buu the ticket (5 euro or so) from the driver as you board. It takes about 15 minutes to the main rail station. On the return trip it leave Tours about 2 hours (I think) before the flight. Details are here http://www.tours.aeroport.fr/index_en.php
I like Tours, it has a decent Museum (Musee beaux artes) and an impressive cathedral. There is a square with cafes and restaurants. It would probably be ok for 2 days, but on a 3 day trip youd probably need to catch the train to Chenonceaux.
As far as I know, no Christmas market. Christmas isnt really a big deal.
4star would be the biggest, poshest and most expensive hotels. Without doing some research, I couldn%26#39;t tell you if tehre are any in Tours itself.

Simon%26#39;s ideas are spot-on. May I add that maybe you could take a day-tour to some of the castles, there are many travel agents offering them.
I stayed at the Best Western Central during my visit last May, I think it%26#39;s a 3*, but the rooms are huge and really comfortable, and the location is wonderful to walk around the city.

As Wiz says, there is a bus which runs into the centre of Tours.
There is the four star Hotel de L%26#39;Univers in the centre of Tours:

They usually have a small Xmas market on the Boulevard Heurteloup, right opposite the hotel.
I like Tours, it is good for shopping, for sight seeing, and for restaurants. The twelfth century cathedral is worth a visit, and the old quarter around Place Plumerau has lots of restaurants and bars. You can also stroll down to the Loire, which runs through Tours, and then stop for a drink on the way back.

There was an Xmas market. Right in front of the railway station. I was in Tours 13-14 December 2008.
