We will be arriving in Tours via the TGV and want to rent a car. Is it difficult to get out of the city? We have made the mistake of renting a car in a large city and then trying to get out alive! Roundabouts and unfamiliar signs can be daunting. Are the car rental lots at the station?

Firstly, there are two stations serving Tours: an in town station and the TGV station at St. Pierre des Corps. Each station has rental car services.
Secondly, Tours is a city about the size of Lubbock so someone from Houston should have no problem with the traffic, even though there is congestion at normal commuting times in the morning and late afternoon.
Thirdly, the road signs in France are really no different than those in the US except speeds are in Kilometers/hour rather than miles/hour. Should you want to aquaint yourselves with French driving rules, the following is an excellent resource:

The TGV arrives at St Pierre Des Corps which is on the outskirts of the City - It is a short drive to the Autoroute - 5-10 minutes. As for Central Tours the city centre is not that big and if you can find the Loire River then you should easily navigate to the routes out of town. In fact stay on the city side and you can drive east to Amboise or Blois. Or a visit from the South West to the nice little town of Azay Le Rideau.

... and take a GPS with European maps! I have driven in many European countries and major cities without problems but after a trip to France last summer with a GPS I wouldn%26#39;t be without one again!

Very simple to rent at St Pierre des Corps, and yes a GPS [we have a Garmin Nuvi] very helpful for navigating through towns.
We use Autoeurope, the toll free number.
