Help with Itinerary: 2 Weeks in Alps and Central/SouthFrance

My husband and I are going to France in mid-April to visit a friend who%26#39;s working in La Plagne for the winter. We have two weeks to spend travelling and haven%26#39;t bought plane tickets yet, so our entry/exit point is still flexible. We%26#39;ll keep our itinerary mainly to France, as we want to really experience the places we stay, not just drive through.

Husband is an expert skier and cyclist who wants to experience both sports in France. I%26#39;m more keen on the cultural side, with some cycling and warm weather/seaside visits, too. We%26#39;ll spend at least 4 days in the La Plagne area - itinerary is open beyond that, though.

Any recommendations on the best areas to visit, given our interests? Would it be best to hire a car so that we%26#39;ll be able to travel around central/south France, or is it feasible/convenient to transport luggage/ski gear on the train?

Thanks for your opinions...
