Gidday
Just wondering if you could pass on any info, websites, options for getting a family of 5 from Geneva to Bourg St Maruice.
Personally I would love to catch the train - but apparently we have to get the airport train into city and THEN find our train to Bourg.
As we are traveling on a tight budget....we are looking at cheepest options!
So any info, websites adv etc most welcome!

Hi Curtis,
I hope you had a good christmas and wish you all the best for the new year.
I cannot comment on the train side of things from Geneva to Bourg ,as i always hire a car from the french side of the airport.
The company i always use is autoeurope www.auto-europe.co.uk 0800 169 9797 , and have always found them to offer great deals. The trip from Geneva to Bourg by car takes about 2 1/2 hrs by car via Lake Annecy or you can stay on the motorway all the way to Albertville avoiding Annecy.
For info on buses etc from Geneva to Bourg you can go to the following Geneva airport link
www.gva.ch/en/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-70/
I hope this is of help and wish you all the best.

Thanks so much for your speedy reply Jon.
So funny getting your message this morning cause we were just found a car rental mob who let you pick up at Geneva and Drop off at Bourg for $330 Aussie dollars which is 165 euro. That is through company called Argus Rentals - they were the only one we could find that let us do a drop off at Bourg St M. I checked out the one you mentioned auto-europe but they did not seem to allow you to do drop off%26#39;s! What has been your experience with this?
With car hire being such a good option - now comes the next bit.....how do we find our way there!! My hubby is a confinant driver and is used to driving all all conditions, snow etc. SO that part is all good - just reading road sign%26#39;s etc is the scary bit. Any good maps, links etc. How hard are the road sign%26#39;s to follow?
Will check out that lake you mentioned via google for now - that will give us some idea!

Hi again,
Each time i have driven from Geneva i have always had the car for the whole duration of my holiday and then dropped the car back at Geneva, the company i mentioned (Autoeurope) used Europcar from Geneva and there is a Europcar office in Bourg-St-Maurice located at the crossroads on the main road through BsM opposite the cinema just down from the petrol station.
The drive from Geneva is fairly straightforward once you have negotiated the main part of the city, from the car hire (these directions are from the french side) you come out of the car hire section onto the main road and turn right, emediately there is a border check to drive through, once through there you go through the tunnel under the runway to a crossroads, go stright over this and onto a small round about, go over this onto the Route de Ferney and follow this road all the way to a crossroads (about 1 1/2 miles or so) go over this crossroad and the road takes you down via the side of the lake.
At the other end there is a bridge stay in the middle and at the other end carry on the same road (do not take the left fork,or the right)from here you want to keep in the right hand lane (next to the kirb) and carry on this road until you see a Toyota car delership on the left hand side of the road, when you see this take the turning directly opposite into the Avenue du Thonex,at the end of the road you will see a sign for the french motorway, after a little while (this is on the A411) you wil pass another checkpoint and then you just follow the signs for Annecy via the A411 - A40 then turn off onto the A41 to Annecy.
Once nearing Annecy you will need to follow the sighns for Annecy Sud (Annecy south) this will then take you through Annecy all you need to do is follow the green signs for Albertville.Once out of Annecy and after having driven down the side of the lake ,you carry on folowing the signs for Albertville, once at Albertville you just stay on the main road going through (you know you are on the right road as it is a dead straight road with several sets of traffic lights,at the other end of Albertville you will come to a round about ,you will need to take the fourth exit frommemory and head towards Moutiers on the N90.
Once nearing Moutiers Bourg-Saint-Maurice starts to be signposted (white signs with black lettering) along with Les arcs etc from here it is just a trip up the Valley on a normal road with one lane in each direction for most of it with a few tunnels thrown in,from Moutiers BsM is about 29 km away, the whole trip should take around 2 1/2 hours in good traffic and weather.
You can also save a little time by avoiding Annecy by staying on the motorway ( A41) and joining up with the A43 and nto BsM via Chambery - Albertville - Moutiers and onto BsM.
I hope these directions are making sense and i have not waffled, if you are not going for a while send me you%26#39;re full postal address via the message facility on this site (or via my website at www.ski-bourgstmaurice-lesarcs.co.uk ) and i will post you a full route map, or if you send me you%26#39;re email address i can send you a Google earth route map also.
One final point on returning to Geneva airport the thing people find the worst is that once near Geneva if you miss the right exit for the city you end up driving down a 3 mile stretch of Swiss motorway and get stung for a 30euro payment (vignette),to avoid this once on the A40 near Geneva you will stat to see signs for the Tellipherique du Saleve (think the spelling is correct) this is a cable car that spans the motorway which takes tourists up to a lookout point over Geneva ,when you start to see signs for this you will need to then keep a lookout for signs for the A411,this exit is located near a flyover on the edge of a small industrial site,by taking this exit A411 it will take you onto the road you originally came out of Geneva on,all you then do is follow you%26#39;re route to the airport in reverse.
Once again i hope this has helped and if you would like a route map send me you%26#39;re email address and postal address and i will forward to you.
Many Regards
Jon.

Hi Again,
On reflection with regards to the above directions, the car dealership i mention maywell be a Nissan not a Toyota garage, and the road opposite is the Rue du Vallon, but once you see a car dealership on the left hand side of the road the turning on the right required is virtually opposite.

No worries - thanks again for all your brilliant help.
Just on shopping in Bourg - Super U or something like that seems to be the way to go yes? So is that like a regular supermarket where you buy fruit and veg and meat etc. Any hints in this regard - I have a family of 6 to feed and not sure at all on the type of fruit and veg avilable - also is meat, chicken, fish etc.
Ok - thanks again for all your wonderful support.

Curtis

Brillant instructions Jon they should be a sticky because it is so easy to make a mistake and end up paying for the Swiss motorways.

Hi again,
No worries ,only too glad to help.
For food shopping in BsM there is a choice of three supermarkets,Lidl%26#39;s which is located on the right hand side of the main road through Bourg (about 1/2 mile up the road from the train station) this is also located next to a brilliant sport shop called Sport-Extreme which sells excellent quality outdoor clothing ,at very reasonable prices.
The other two are Super-U and Intermarche which are located at the other end of Bourg, of the two Super-U is the largest and best stocked with a mind boggling array of fresh friut ,vegetables ,meats etc,and sells preety much anything you can think of,Intermarche is smaller and maybe a little more expensive.
Also on saturday mornings there is a market which is located in front of the church, and also down the bottom of the pedestrian road next to the Hotel du Ville, where you can buy fruit ,veg ,hot cooked chickens, joints of porc and roast potatoes etc if you wish.
For good food when eating out ,Ski Roc near the train station serves excellent fresh cooked,pizza%26#39;s,omelletes, burgers, and pasta dishes, Le Refuge (located on the main shopping street between the church and Hotel du Ville) ,Le Savoyarde (located just up from the Refuge) ,La Tarteflette (which is located opposite Arc Adventures, on the left hand side just down from the Hotel Du Ville, as if walking down towards the main road and train station) and the Hostellerie du Petite Saint Bernard ( located just down the main road from the train station over the round about on the right hand side), apart from Ski Roc and maybe Le Savoyarde the others should be booked, just in case.
The cheapest bars to have a drink in are the bar of the Hotel L%26#39;Angival, this is located on the street behind the Post Office , Bazoomz which is on the main road through Bourg and is opposite the trains station next to the Lamy Estate Agency ,also there is a bar (whose name escapes me) which if you stand outside the Hotel du Ville looking up the main pedestrian shopping street, its the one on the right hand side and opposite an excellent patisserie.
Once again i hope some of this is usefull and wish you an enjoyable, safe trip.
Many Regards
Jon.

Hi JBart,
Many thanks,I have been toying with the idea of buying a small video/digital camera that will record for about 2 - 3 hrs,and the next time i use Geneva record the trip and then post it onto the web with a link(although not sure how to do this as computors and that kind of thing are still a bit of a mystery to me).
I hope you had a lovely christmas holiday and wish you all the best for the new year and beyond.
Many Regards
Jon.
