Soupe à l'Oignon

Please suggest where to get terrific Soupe à l%26#39;Oignon. We%26#39;ll be staying in the 6th...so it would be great to know a place in the neighborhood. Otherwise...we%26#39;re willing to travel for the best! Thank you!

I would imagine that most of the 9000 restaurants in Paris do an onion soup, and most of them will be good.

It%26#39;s one of the things you dont need to worry about - step out of your hotel, and check the menu of the nearest restaurants.

Also, put the words onion soup in the search box under the green bar above and many previous threads on the subject will pop up.

My stepdaughter loves it and we were just in New York and went to %26quot;the best%26quot; La Bonne Soupe%26quot;...so I%26#39;m really looking for a place that is known for this. I%26#39;m sure most places serve it....but trying to find what other%26#39;s consider truly wonderful.

I saved this from a previous posting last summer that I saved. It went on for pages as Anthony went around Paris for days trying onion soup at different restaurants.

Posted on: 5:16 pm, May 14, 2008 French Onion Soup is a favorite of mine, and I was determined to find a great one. Hit it on my second try...it was absolutely perfect. Chewy cheese browned just right, rich broth, plenty of onions, not too salty, hint of sherry...

Gotta give a plug for the establishment:

le Terminus

5 rue du Bac

Immediately east of the Musee D%26#39;Orsay, mid-block.

My first attempt was in a bistro on the west end of Ile Saint Louis...horrible. Watery broth, tasteless except for what only can be described as %26quot;greasy%26quot;, minimal onions. I actually added salt to it, something I rarely do.

But if you%26#39;re an onion soup fan, try out le Terminus. My wife had a Parisian Salad which was also excellent, and the carafe d%26#39;eau was ice-cold, which also puts the place in the top 1% in my book!

Thanks so much! And the next time you are in NYC make reservations for lunch at La Bonne Soupe. It is the best we%26#39;ve ever had.

Daisy - I ate onion soup every day I was in Paris and every bowl was different in taste! (All good imo). I suppose my favorite was at Fouquet%26#39;s. Maybe because it was my first meal in Paris and it was a rainy day and I was so happy. Have a great time!

One small caveat if I may... Read the menu carefully or ask the waiter if the onion soup is ala les Halles or Lyonaise. The Lyonaise style is not what you are expecting. It is made with a chicken stock and the onions are not browned or at least not as much as a les Halles style.

I had saved the exact post mentioned above, and based on that recommendation, tried Terminus last fall when I was craving a good bowl of onion soup. It was terrible - watery, tasteless, rubbery cheese that wasn%26#39;t properly browned. There%26#39;s got to be a better one in Paris than this - I%26#39;ve found much better versions in the US!

I am not a great soup fan but my partner loves Soupe à l%26#39;Oignon and has tried it in most restaurants that we visit in France. Two places in which it has been judged worth ordering repeatedly are L%26#39;Époque on rue du Cardinal-Lemoine and Au Bon Coin on rue de la Collégiale. They are both in the 5e and so easily accessible from the 6e.

Of course, they are both favourite places of ours in which to dine apart from the excellence and consistency of their Soupe à l%26#39;Oignon.

Bon appetit!

You will get the best soupe à l%26#39;oignon in brasseries; for example chez Jenny at République or Bofinger at Bastille offer excellent onion soups.
