We (3 Couples) are going to Lyon from 6th - 9th March. What is the weather normally like at this time of year. We were thinking of booking into the Mercure Lyon Wilson Hotel. Does anybody have any experience of this hotel. Is it a good location to explore Lyon from. would it be possible to get a Taxi large enough to take six people from the Airport to our hotel and what would be the approximate cost. Hope this is not too many questions.

Nobody knows about weather unfortunately! I will be honest, March is not the best time of year in Lyon (neither is it in Ireland I assume). March can be cold, the average temperature is 6/7°C only, but not as rainy as April, if you are lucky you may have sunny days...but weather is unpredictable...

I would definitively stay in the Presqu%26#39;ïle: if you like Mercure hotels, I suggest that you pick up an other Mercure located between Rhöne and Saône rivers, in order to stay in the middle of everything.
Regarding taxis, usual cars don%26#39;t accept more than 4 people, but there are larger cars for up to 6 people; you will find a guy who organize the taxi line who will be able to call a lerger car (may be you%26#39;ll have to wait).
The usual price for a taxi ride from LYS to the city center is 40/45€ at day time, 60€ at night, but there might be an extra fare for being 6 people. You may consider booking your taxi?

Thanks to Only Lyon for your reply, I am still thinking of going to the Mercure Lyon Wilson Hotel as it has been recently re-furbished. What is the area like around the hotel, is it safe at night? Are there any Restaurants or Bars in that area?
Does the Hotel have a Bar?

Mullin, there is a selection of restaurants in this area, espl. on the boats alongside the bank of the Rhone, but of course in the Old City and Presqui-ile the choice is much bigger. And if you are interested in the Irish or British pubs they are also based in the Old Lyon. And it will take you around 20-25 minutes to walk there from your Mercure Lyon Wilson Hotel.
The area itself is quite safe.

Thanks Darth_Feanor for your reply. I am a bit confused about where exactly the %26quot;Old Town%26quot; is located. Is it on the Presqu-ile or is it over the Saone River. Which area is the best for Night Life e.g. Restaurants and Bars. Is it the area on the Presqu-ile between Pont Layfayette and Pont Wilson or is it at Bellecour? Did you mean it would take 20 minutes to reach Bellecour or to get to the other side of the Saone?

Mullin, I already explained you (following your first post last october) where the presqu%26#39;île is and did actually give you the link to a map : probably it was not clear enough, so it is the part located between the 2 rivers. Yes Bellecour is precisely located there.
What we call the old city is the Renaissance area, called %26quot;vieux Lyon%26quot; or %26quot;Saint Jean%26quot; neighborhood on maps or guide books, that is located on the Saône left bank.
Please you should also look at the 2 websites I previously recommended, you will find a lot of useful and practical infos.
There are loads of bars and rectaurants both in the presqu%26#39;île and in the old town (the old town is more touristic though).
